The students from Scientia, the undergraduate journal of scientific research, host a monthly seminar series called Talk Science that highlights the work of undergraduate and faculty researchers at Notre Dame. This month’s presenters were senior mathematics major Mitchell Faulk and Nitesh Chawla, the Frank Freimann Collegiate Associate Professor of Engineering in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Katia Fernandez Soto and Andjela Pehar, two science students researching in Jenifer Prosperi’s lab at the Harper Cancer Research Institute, are making strides in the quest to understand the role of the APC tumor-suppressor in breast cancer.
At the Harper Cancer Research Institute, Jenifer Prosperi, assistant professor of biochemistry & molecular biology at the Indiana University School of Medicine - South Bend and adjunct assistant professor of biological sciences at the University of Notre Dame, is up against a formidable opponent: metaplastic breast cancer. Fortunately, she’s bringing reinforcements.
Since 2012, when Prosperi arrived at Harper, two Notre Dame undergraduates have researched cancer alongside her: junior Katia Fernandez Soto and senior Andjela Pehar.
This past Thursday, October 31, more than 400 students gathered at the Jordan Hall of Science for the annual Fall Undergraduate Research Fair to learn about getting involved in undergraduate research at Notre Dame and other locations. The fair began with a research internship information session led primarily by biological sciences students; followed by student poster presentations of summer research projects and information tables of organizations that provide or support undergraduate research; and concluded with an information session for undergraduate research opportunities in chemistry.
This past Thursday (Oct. 10) at the Math for Everyone lecture series, six presenters joined a panel discussion on what to do with a mathematics degree after graduating from Notre Dame.
The panel featured individuals with careers in education and industry, and included five Notre Dame alumni.

Each year the Dooley Society awards stipends to a group of current Notre Dame students or alumni in medical school. Recipients are awarded these stipends to cover funds for international medical missions. This past Saturday, a group of students convened in the Jordan Hall of Science to present their medical mission experiences to the Dooley Society and the Notre Dame community.
On Friday, Aug. 2, undergraduate researchers who spent their summers in laboratories at the University of Notre Dame, University of Michigan, and Ivy Tech Community College, presented their summer research projects at the Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Jordan Hall of Science.
Research findings were shared as oral and poster presentations throughout the day, with a total of 164 presentations from areas of science and engineering.
Most people think that 2013 was an off year for the Olympics, but not at Notre Dame. Students in the physics section of the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs at Michigan State University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame competed in the Physics Olympics on Monday, July in the Jordan Hall of Science. Comprised of undergraduates from across the country, the REU programs at the respective universities give students opportunities to work with faculty and graduate students on research and other projects throughout the summer.
The researchers at the Harper Cancer Research Institute are some of the best minds in their fields, with decades of scientific research experience in the fight against cancer. But some of Institute’s top researchers haven’t even finished college yet.
And even though Ansel Nalin ’14 and Matthew Metzinger ’15 still have to contend with midterms and homework (to say nothing of dining hall food), the two College of Science undergraduates are performing serious research in the fight against cancer—thanks to research funding from the Notre Dame College of Science.
Physics major Patrick Fasano, a rising sophomore at the University of Notre Dame, is spending his summer as an intern at the Cosmic Ray Division (CRD) of the Yereven Physics Institute in Yerevan, Armenia.
Michael Vella, a rising applied and computational mathematics and statistics major, has been selected for a highly competitive Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Greg Crawford, dean of the College of Science, hosted the annual Dean’s Award Luncheon on Friday, May 17, 2013 in the Jordan Hall of Science Galleria. Over 250 students, family members, faculty, and staff were in attendance to celebrate the achievements of the college’s top graduates from the Class of 2013.
The College of Science Joint Annual Meeting (COS-JAM) attracted over 300 student attendees to the Jordan Hall of Science on Friday, May 3. This year, 146 abstracts were submitted from 188 undergraduate researchers. Students presented their original research in the areas of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics, Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. In addition, six guest presenters from the Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair for K–12 students exhibited their research in the Galleria. Participation at this year’s event was the largest in the seven-year history of COS-JAM.
Two College of Science students have received Fulbright scholarships to conduct research in Singapore this year. Patrick Kramer, who earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry this year, and Amy Klegarth, a third year graduate student who has worked in Singapore before, will be involved in different kinds of research.
Juniors Daniel Irvine and Rebecca Marton have been named 2013 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. They were selected from thousands of applicants to receive the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.
Senior Patrick O’Hayer has co-authored a paper in the Journal of Neuroscience titled, “Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Is Produced by Dying Retinal Neurons and Is Required for Müller Glia Proliferation during Zebrafish Retinal Regeneration.” The paper was published in the April 10 issue of the journal.
Talk Science is a monthly seminar series hosted by Scientia, the Undergraduate Journal of Scientific Research for the College of Science. The seminars are held in Jordan Hall of Science and provide an enriching, yet informal, setting for College of Science undergraduates and faculty to build camaraderie and to share the advances in different areas of science. Junior applied and computational mathematics and statistics (ACMS) major Michael Vella and Rebecca Wingert, Elizabeth and Michael Gallagher Family Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, both gave presentations on their research at the most recent Talk Science seminar on Thursday, April 18.
Each year, several graduating seniors conduct year-long thesis projects by working one-on-one with a faculty member or graduate student to make an intellectual contribution to their chosen field of study. The topic can be tailored to the student’s individual interest and may be done in the form of a paper, narrative nonfiction essay, creative writing project, journalistic article, documentary film, or museum exhibition. The senior thesis project is the perfect opportunity for students to showcase the research, analysis, writing, and presentation skills they have developed as undergraduates.

Chemistry major Ansel Nalin has received the 2013 Norbert L. Wiech Award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding junior who has excelled in academics and undergraduate research at the University of Notre Dame. The award was established by Norbert Wiech, a 1960 Notre Dame alumnus who has focused the majority of his professional career on drug development, especially in the area of rare diseases.
Visitors to the University of Notre Dame’s Hesburgh Library on a recent day most likely thought they’d wandered into location filming for a “CSI” or “NCIS” television episode. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded a library study area, and a team of what appeared to be crime scene experts scoured the site for evidence.
However, the dramatic scene had an academic purpose. First-year students enrolled in a “Forensic Chemistry” course taught by chemistry and biochemistry professor Marya Lieberman worked the Hesburgh Library crime scene as the capstone experience for the class.

The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States has selected MurphyKate Montee as a Churchill Scholar for the academic year 2013-2014. She will use the scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom for her Master of Advanced Studies (Part III) in Theoretical Mathematics with a focus on geometry and topology.
The University of Notre Dame’s Eck Institute for Global Health and the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) have announced a new opportunity for IUSM medical students to receive global health training through a joint Medical Doctor/Master of Science in Global Health (M.D./M.S.) integrated dual degree program that will begin in August.
“We are excited about this joint effort that will prepare students to make a big impact on the health of some of the world’s most underserved populations,” says Gregory Crawford, dean of the College of Science at Notre Dame.
