In the midst of a surely hectic midterms week, Elena Brindley took time to share her experiences working in undergraduate research. Her research foci thus far have revolved around mosquitoes and their vision. Elena started out her research by working alongside Prof. O’ Tousa of the Department of Biological Sciences in a lab that focused on degenerative eye diseases in Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly.

October’s Talk Science highlights diabetes and cancer immunotherapy research

Every month, Notre Dame students gather in the Jordan Hall of Science to learn about ongoing scientific research at the University.

Called Talk Science, this monthly event is organized by Scientia, Notre Dame’s Undergraduate Journal of Scientific Research. Students enjoy pizza and beverages while listening to presentations by undergraduate and faculty researchers. These presentations encourage students to engage with research outside their disciplines and give them a glimpse of a few of the myriad opportunities available for research at Notre Dame. On Wednesday, October 8, students heard from Jeff Hansen and Professor Brian Baker.

REU students compete in the Physics Olympics

On July 24, the Department of Physics and Notre Dame’s Physics Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program hosted the annual Physics Olympics in the Jordan Hall of Science. REU students from Michigan State, Purdue, and Notre Dame participated in the challenges. The Physics Olympics allows the REU students from these three universities universities to participate in friendly competition.

Top science seniors honored at annual awards luncheon

The top graduating seniors in the College of Science were honored at the annual Dean’s Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 16. Gregory Crawford, dean of the College of Science, presented the Dean’s Award and Dean’s Research Award and the chairs of each department recognized the top students in each of their majors.  In addition, Michael Hildreth, professor of physics, was awarded the Shilts/Leonard Teaching Award.

COS-JAM showcases scientific research from over 180 student researchers

On Friday, May 2, the eighth annual College of Science Joint Annual Meeting (COS-JAM) was held in the Jordan Hall of Science and featured over 140 research presentations from more than 180 student researchers. The mission of COS-JAM is to highlight undergraduate scientific research at the College of Science. COS-JAM is held in conjunction with the annual Undergraduate Scholars Conference at Notre Dame.

Senior awarded meritorious honor at AACR meeting

Senior biological sciences major Nicholas Pagani attended the 105th annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research held April 5-9, 2014, in San Diego, California. The meeting drew over 18,000 researchers, patient advocates, and other professionals in the cancer field from around the world. The theme for this year’s meeting was “Harnessing Breakthroughs – Targeting Cures,” which reflected on the translation of basic science into clinical advances for the benefit of cancer patients, a process that is occurring at an increasing pace.

They were selected from thousands of applicants nationwide to receive the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year. Students discuss summer math opportunities

Math for Everyone Series

This semester’s Math for Everyone series launched last Thursday (Jan. 23), with a panel of students discussing the topic, “What to do mathematically over the summer.”

Moderated by Jeff Diller, professor of mathematics and director for the Seminar for Undergraduate Mathematics Research (SUMR) program, the panel featured five students who spent a summer attending a mathematics-based Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.
