Scientia hosts first Talk Science: Innovation Series of the semester

The students from Scientia, the undergraduate journal of scientific research, host a monthly seminar series called Talk Science that highlights the work of undergraduate and faculty researchers at the University. This semester, Talk Science will focus on research that can be applied in innovative ways. This month’s presenters were junior biological sciences major Vincent Riccelli and Hsueh-Chia Chang, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

Senior awarded meritorious honor at AACR meeting

Senior biological sciences major Nicholas Pagani attended the 105th annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research held April 5-9, 2014, in San Diego, California. The meeting drew over 18,000 researchers, patient advocates, and other professionals in the cancer field from around the world. The theme for this year’s meeting was “Harnessing Breakthroughs – Targeting Cures,” which reflected on the translation of basic science into clinical advances for the benefit of cancer patients, a process that is occurring at an increasing pace.

This semester’s Math for Everyone series launched last Thursday (Jan. 23), with a panel of students discussing the topic, “What to do mathematically over the summer.”

Moderated by Jeff Diller, professor of mathematics and director for the Seminar for Undergraduate Mathematics Research (SUMR) program, the panel featured five students who spent a summer attending a mathematics-based Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.

Over 400 students learn about undergraduate research opportunities at annual research fair

This past Thursday, October 31, more than 400 students gathered at the Jordan Hall of Science for the annual Fall Undergraduate Research Fair to learn about getting involved in undergraduate research at Notre Dame and other locations. The fair began with a research internship information session led primarily by biological sciences students; followed by student poster presentations of summer research projects and information tables of organizations that provide or support undergraduate research; and concluded with an information session for undergraduate research opportunities in chemistry.

Students share their medical mission experiences with the Dooley Society

Dooley Society medical mission presentations

Each year the Dooley Society awards stipends to a group of current Notre Dame students or alumni in medical school. Recipients are awarded these stipends to cover funds for international medical missions. This past Saturday, a group of students convened in the Jordan Hall of Science to present their medical mission experiences to the Dooley Society and the Notre Dame community.
